Please note: This project is a conceptual case study created to demonstrate design competencies. Frederika De Vries is a fictional photographer, and the website discussed is not for an actual client.
In the realm of black-and-white photography, the interplay of light and shadow can evoke profound emotions. To showcase this art form, I conceptualized a digital platform for Frederika De Vries, a fictional photographer whose work embodies the essence of minimalism intertwined with sensuality.
This case study explores the process of designing a website that reflects her unique style — a harmonious blend of brutalist architecture and intimate portraiture.
A digital portfolio as refined as the art it showcases — minimal, bold, and effortlessly elegant.
THE APPROACH
The goal was to create a website that felt as curated and intentional as Frederika’s photography. A striking yet refined design choice was the centered horizontal menu, subtly overlaying the content rather than sitting in a traditional navigation bar. This approach makes navigation an integral part of the experience — bold enough to stand out, yet seamlessly integrated into the composition.
The overall design follows the principles of minimalism, using a monochromatic palette to echo the photographer’s black-and-white medium. Generous negative space ensures that each photograph can breathe, while the typography was carefully chosen to complement the sophistication of Frederika’s artistic vision. Smooth transitions guide users through the site, creating an immersive journey that mirrors the rhythm and depth found in her work. Every interaction is considered, with no distractions — just an elegant, flowing experience that lets the photography take center stage.
